What others say about working with me

Colm Flanagan

Head of School,

Seoul Foreign School

When you work with Jan-Mark, you are engaging with an educator who is fundamentally driven by a commitment to make a difference.

I had the honor of working alongside Jan-Mark for five years. In that time and on a daily basis I witnessed an extraordinary intellectual and emotional curiosity, a creative ability to solve problems and invent solutions, a humility that made him an outstanding team player, a work ethic that drove him to consistently deliver for others and an integrity that allowed him to make decisions, free from personal bias but based on the needs of the community he served.

Jan-Mark marries a deep philosophical understanding of the educational needs of children with a practical, no nonsense approach to getting things done.

Jan-Mark and I worked together when he was an Asst. Head of School.  Jan-Mark sees the vision and strategic direction for an institution and siezes every opportunity to empower key stakeholders to move closer to enacting that vision.  Whether it be advising and collaborating with administrative stakeholders, leading professional learning communities, empowering educators or mid-level leaders, collaborating with board stakeholders or parent communities, or working with accrediting bodies, Jan Mark is able to develop supportive systems to move a school forward.  On top of this he is an expert Concept-Based consultant, an IB Workshop leader, Global Citizenship, Sustainability, and Service aficionado, and an effective coach, consultant, leader, and good person. No matter the strategic growth opportunity, Jan Mark has the knowledge, the people skills, and perseverance to support any organization toward their strategic goals.

At Seoul Foreign School we value language study at all levels. From the earliest years to graduation our students study in English but are given the opportunity to preserve their own language and learn new ones. International in every way - this makes me feel at home. When someone asks me: “Where are you from?” I can’t really answer without a story attached. So here is my story.

When you think of Seoul Foreign School, what comes to mind? Maybe you think of academic and creative excellence, a dedication to the service of others, or potentially our iconic Korean Gate. Inspired by these aspects of our school, a few enterprising staff members have created The Gate - a professional development center providing learning experiences to our community and beyond.

When Jan-Mark Seewald began his role as Assistant Head of School for Academics, he aspired to strengthen SFS’ role as a center for teaching and learning excellence. “We were already achieving success in the classroom,” shares Jan-Mark, “but with the history, talent, and resources available here, we questioned how we could expand our reach to other members of our community.
