Why I Love What I Love

Family trip to the mountains of western Canada

Learning - I’m curious about how things work and love experiencing 'light bulb' moments. This drives my commitment to meaningful inquiry-driven learning, which fosters deeper understanding of issues, patterns, and contexts beyond just facts and skills.

Play - Learning is most meaningful when we are having fun exploring, laughing, connecting and enjoying ourselves. I believe we are always learning and more so when we play.

Design Thinking - I have always enjoyed taking things apart to understand their mechanics. I appreciate the beauty of well-designed objects like cars, household items, and buildings. After training and working as an engineer, I became a teacher and continue to use design thinking as an effective tool for learning. I have always been a Lego fan and use it as a learning tool with students and adults.

Strategic thinking - I enjoy puzzling, problem solving, and developing strategies to overcome obstacles. I love playing strategic games like Risk and Settlers of Catan. I keep 2D and 3D puzzles in my classroom and office for students and visitors to spark interesting conversations. My passion for tackling complex challenges has led me to strategic leadership roles, including timetabling, whole school planning and strategy work, and assisting schools with events and implementation of educational programs like those offered by the IB.

Making a difference - I love being involved in meaningful work that has a positive impact on the communities I am a part of. I believe through community engagement and working together, we are capable of much more than we first think possible or would ever be able to do individually.

Collaboration - I value human connections and teamwork, which drives my passion for traveling and meeting diverse individuals. Teaching is a complex art best done collaboratively, moving beyond isolated classrooms. Educators must unite to support every student's learning in our increasingly complex world.

And finally, I cannot live without…

Nature - I need to be outside with some green around me every day, from hiking, to biking, to observing plants and animals, be it on the balcony or in the wild. This is how I recharge.
